On 9 May 2022, we will once again celebrate Europe Day in Estonia.
As in the previous two years, the events will take place in six cities across Estonia: Tallinn, Tartu, Narva, Võru, Pärnu, Kuressaare. In addition, Europe Day events and activities will take place in Põlva, Hiiumaa and Haapsalu, under the leadership of the local Europe Direct Centres.
2022 has been declared the European Year of Youth, which is why the Europe Day events are mainly targeted to Estonian schoolchildren and students.
Europe Day events and activities in cities can be divided into two parts. Schoolchildren are welcome to take part in the Rakett69 competition. All citizens are invited to participate in an exciting orienteering game in their home town.
A walk in Europe
On 7–9 May, My Europe orienteering trails will be open in Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu, Võru, Narva and Kuressaare.
To follow the trail, you have to upload the Navicup app to your smart tool (the link is below). The map of the city with checkpoints will be displayed on the screen with four trail options — the green trail, the grants trail, the digital trail and the culture trail. Participants can choose how many trails to pass.
When arriving at a checkpoint in the order you choose, three multiple-choice questions will appear on the screen. The participant has to answer the question to continue the walk. It does not matter if the answer is right or wrong, the goal is to pass the checkpoints and gain new knowledge!
There is no time limit for passing the trails: this can be done on three days, from 7th to 9th May. An ongoing walk can be paused in the application and resumed later, even the next day.
Among all those who pass at least one trail, we will draw Estravel vouchers (value EUR 100) for organising a trip in Estonia or elsewhere in Europe.

Competition for young people — smart and green solutions for my hometown
In cooperation with the popular science competition show Rakett69 and the KVARK science theatre, a green solutions contest for schoolchildren Rohelend Rakett69-ga (“Green flight with Rakett69”) has been announced. The contest invites schoolchildren to submit their ideas for green solutions in their hometown, municipality, Estonia or in the whole Europe.
Pupils from 7 to 12 grades are invited to participate in the contest. The team can consist of 1-5 students from the same class, hobby group or friendship. When registering an idea, one must select the region where he/she aims to participate in the final contest.
In each region - Kuressaare, Pärnu, Tallinn, Narva, Tartu and Võru – a special selection committee selects three ideas, which will be further developed with the help of experienced mentors. On Europe Day, the jury will select the winner of each region in the idea pitching competition. As a prize, the winning teams will be awarded a to a two-day trip to Brussels!
In addition, they can spend a splendid day with their class or friends at Rakett69 Science Studios or AHHAA Science Center, or invite the KVARK Science Theater to visit them.
Mini-concerts at the Europa Experience
As part of the Europe Day celebrations, students of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EMTA) will give mini-concerts at the Europa Experience in Tallinn (Rävala 4) on 7 and 8 May. All music lovers are invited to enjoy six 20-minute concerts (at 12.00, 14.00 and 16.00 on both dates). Chamber music collectives will present repertoire of different eras, including music by Estonian composers.

The 2022 is the European Year of Youth and therefore the main target group of this year’s events are schoolchildren and students. But of course music lovers of all ages are welcome!
On 7 and 8 May, the Europa Experience will be opened from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Europe Day seminar
On 9 May 12-13.00 we will discuss at a Europe Day seminar what Europe Day means to us and how to celebrate peace not victory on that day.
The debate will be attended by President Alar Karis, entrepreneur and investor Sten Tamkivi and the Estonian winner of the Juvenes Translatores translation contest of the European Commission, GAG student, Anna Milena Linder. The debate will be chaired by Vivian Loonela, Head of the European Commission Representation in Estonia.
At the end of the seminar, we will announce the 2022 European of the Year in Estonia.

Europe Day events on 9 May
Europe Day events will take place on May 9 from 2 pm to 5 pm in the central squares of Tallinn, Tartu, Narva, Võru and Pärnu. Kuressaare will start celebrating already on May 8 at noon, because on the same day the city celebrates its anniversary.
Each event has a “Rakett69” area, where in addition to getting to know the ideas of the best teams in your city, you can conduct various scientific experiments yourself with the help of instructors. Besides science and orientation, we also offer a great entertainment program!
In Tallinn, several embassies have opened their doors to visitors on Europe Day. You are welcome to visit the embassies of Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands in their houses and the German and Austrian embassies in Tuvi Park. Stenbock House is open to visitors on 9 May, and Prime Minister Kaja Kallas also invites all 18-year-olds to make a joint picture to celebrate the 18th anniversary of Estonia’s accession to the EU.

What is Europe Day?
Every year on 9 May Europe celebrates peace and unity in our continent. This date is the anniversary of the historic Schuman declaration. In his speech in Paris in 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented his idea of a new kind of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between the nations in Europe unthinkable.
He envisaged the creation of a European institution combining and managing coal and steel production. In less than a year, an agreement to set up such an organisation was signed. The Schuman proposal is considered the beginning of the current European Union.
Organisers
The main organisers of Europe Day events are the European Commission Representation in Estonia, the European Parliament Office and the Europe Direct Information Centres. The youth competition is organised in cooperation with Rakett69 Science Studios and KVARK Science Theatre. The embassies of the EU Member States and eu-LISA will participate in the organisation of the orienteering game.
